Gardening with Mr Brosnan
The new garden at the back of the school is coming along nicely and we were lucky enough to be invited out to plant some pumpkins with Mr Brosnan. He showed us what we need to plant the pumpkin plant and explained what the soil needs to help the pumpkin to grow. We then had to water it. We will be keeping an eye on how it is growing and hopefully we will have a lovely pumpkin for Halloween!
Testing Blubber
We tested whether "blubber" was good at keeping you warm. We placed butter between two gloves to act as blubber and we placed it in cold water. We also placed our other hand in the water with no glove on it. We then had to decide which was kept us warmer. They were both pretty cold but decided that the "blubber glove" kept our hand warmer. It was a fun experiment!
Hedgehog Hair
We did a mini experiment to see if we could grow some cress hair on a hedgehog (not a real one though!!) We will have to watch to see if it grows.....
Making Jelly
In SESE this week we were focusing in on 'Hot & Cold'. For Science we made some jelly which needed some hot water during preparation and then it had to be placed into the cold fridge to set overnight! We had a lovely treat then when Ms. Murphy brought us in some ice-cream - JELLY & ICE-CREAM FOR EVERYONE!!!!!!! It was delicious - maybe we could help to make you some at home now we know the recipe :)
Nature Walk
We went on a nature walk around the school grounds to find some signs of spring. We saw buds growing on the trees, birds singing nicely and the daffodils growing. We even spotted our friend Mr Wagtail.... he is always around the school yard keeping an eye on us at lunchtimes.
Treasure from the sea.....
We were very lucky to get our hands on a a clay pipe that was dredged up from the Slaney river by a mussel trawler. We enjoyed having a feel of it and debating how long it had been there and how it may have ended up in the water. Those pirates are very clumsy!!!
Seasons
We have been learning about the four seasons of the year - spring, summer, autumn and winter. We discussed the work of a farmer throughout the various seasons, the type of weather we get and the life of a hedgehog during the seasons. It was very interesting. Here are some pictures of the work that we did in our copies.
When I Grow Up!
While we were discussing people in the community and the various jobs that they do we also spoke about what we would like to be when we grow up. We have future doctors, fire fighters, gardaí, soldiers, dentists, teachers, astronauts, superheroes, athletes and teagasc workers in the class. Below are some of our pictures....
People in the Community
This week we were discussing people in the community and the different jobs that they do to help us. We spoke about the gardaí, fire fighters, doctors, nurses, postal workers, shopkeepers, hairdressers, bus drivers, etc. and how important they are in the community. We even took on the roles that they do through make-believe play. Check out some of our pictures below.....
Family Photos
In history this week we were talking about our families. We discussed who lives in our homes and we drew some pictures. Some of us also brought in some photographs of our family and we spoke about them with one another. It was nice getting to see everyone's family.
Mixing Colours
As part of SESE this week we are learning about colours. In Science we learned about the primary colours - red, yellow and blue. We found out that by mixing these colours together you can make new colours. We enjoyed experimenting......
Homes
This week we were learning about homes. We discussed the different types of homes you can have and described our own homes. As part of homework we drew a picture of our homes. We presented them the next day using the projector. We then cut them out and glued them into our copies. We also discussed animals and the different homes they have. We had a lot of fun designing homes for various animals. Here are some examples of our work.....
Our School Community
In Geography this week we were discussing what living in a community means and the many people that help us - doctors, gardaí, firefighters, postmen, bus drivers, secretaries, teachers, bin men etc. We focused in on our school community and talked about all the people who are important in school - ourselves, teachers, s.n.a.'s, Mr Brosnan, Ann in the office, Helen our cleaner and Mick our caretaker. Here are just some examples of the wonderful pictures we drew of the people in our school community.....
All About Me Project
As part of history we learned all about ourselves. With the help of our parents we wrote down things about our lives such as where we were born, our first words, our first toy, the age we got our first tooth and lots of other information. We also gathered some photographs from when we were a baby right up until recently. We enjoyed looking at them. We then put together our information and decorated our projects. Here are some photos of the process as well as the finished products hanging on our classroom wall.....
