Fun with letter sounds....
We had fun with our letter sounds this week. We played a game with our partner where player 1 had to roll the dice and find the corresponding number on the letter card and sound it out. Player 2 had to make sure that the sound was right. It was a good game :)
Class Readers
We have moved onto our second class reader - The Lost Ball. We had a look at the books on Monday and we enjoyed reading through them. Ms. Murphy was very impressed when some of us were asked to read out loud for the class! We did a good job but just need to remember to read out louder so everyone can hear!
Fun with blending
This week we had some fun with blending. We had to work as a team to put together a puzzle. In the puzzle box we had a letter sound, a word to blend and a picture. The aim of the puzzle was to match all three together. We had to make sure to work as a team and we even came up with a way of making a process quicker (bundling the letters together, the words together & the pictures together) Each group had different letters so next time we do it we will be working with different sounds. It was a lot of fun!
Double-letter sounds
Letter sounds are about to become a little trickier!! The children are now practicing some double-letter sounds e.g. ai. They are good when it comes to the sounds and coming up with some words with the sound in it but it can become harder when they have to sound out a written word e.g. rain. I find it best to write the word out and split it up for them as follows; r/ai/n, p/ai/n, t/r/ai/n, etc. As they become more confident the letter sounds could be underlines instead. Hope this helps :)
Library Time
Although we haven't mastered reading just yet we are learning lots of new words from our word box work. It is still important that we do some reading and learn how to handle books properly. We enjoy our library time during school and we discuss the pictures and books with each other. Now that we are starting to learn tricky words we will be able to recognise certain words in no time. Reading and/or listening to books being read at home is very important too.
Blending.....
Included in this week's (October 12th) homework folder is a card with duplicates of the letters s, a, t, i, p, n. I would ask that you cut these out and use them to help your children develop their blending abilities.
Place the letters that you want blended onto the table using the cut out letters. Ask your child to sound out each letter one by one e.g. s-a-t. Once they have the right sound sequence get them to say it quicker and they should soon grasp that this is the word 'sat'.
It should be noted that if your child is still struggling with their letter sounds this task will prove difficult and it would be best to concentrate on revising the sounds with them.
Please see below for photographs of the task and if you have any questions please do let me know :)
*Please keep the cards somewhere safe so that they can be used for future homework tasks.

Game - Pairs
Using the cut out duplicate letters to play a game of pairs is a great way to make revising letter sounds fun.....
